Breitling Transocean Chronograph 1915 (Pre-Baselworld 2015)

by Guillaume V - 09/02/2015

In the run up to Baselworld, Breitling, the brand that specializes in aviator's watches, has announced its Transocean Chronograph 1915 model.

This limited series watch is reinterpreting the famous model that was created a century ago.

In 1915, Breitling invented the world’s first independent chronograph pushpiece. In these days pocket chronographs had only one push piece integrated in the crown successively handling the start, stop and zero-reset functions. Keen to ensure ergonomic handling, Breitling chose to place the push piece at 2 o’clock, where the thumb or forefinger naturally rests.

In 1923, the brand begun to perfect this system by separating the stop/start functions, governed by the push piece at 2 o’clock, from the crown-activated zero resetting. Breitling added the final touch to the watch in 1934 by creating a second independent push piece exclusively intended for zero resetting, shaping the modern face of the chronograph.

The vintage look is designed in the pure style of the Transocean collection, here reinterpreting the famous 1915 timepiece but with a modern twist.

The steel case features the famous push piece at 2 o’clock but in a redesigned form that further enhances its functionality. To ensure that this single push piece can successively handle the start, stop and zero-reset functions, Breitling developed the new hand-wound caliber B14, a chronometer-certified caliber. A patent has been filed for this innovative construction.

The two-tone silvered dial is adorned with the Breitling logo and with large Arabic numerals and hands accentuated by a luminescent coating in a beige shade. The vintage touch of the Transocean Chronograph 1915 is reinforced by the steel mesh bracelet – all these details will charm any chronograph watch enthusiasts. No doubt that they will be queuing to acquire one of the 1,915 timepieces issued in this beautiful limited edition.
